Artisan Resource Center
Artisan Resource Center
Formerly named the Nunn Complex Fine and Functional Art Center, this space was originally the sight of the Nunn Better Cabinet Company owned by Barney Nunn. The Nunn Complex was founded in 1986 and in 2000, the name was changed to the Artisan Resource Center. The buliding is located in Marietta, GA about 15-20 min. north of Atlanta. If you are familiar with Marietta, the center is on hwy 41, south of the Big Chicken and behind the bowing alley. For those traveling from ITP, or otherwise, check the website for directions. The building is about 43,000 square feet and is divided into about 25+ studio spaces.
All of this space allows for a very diverse collection of studios including: special effects artists, wood turners, glassblowers, sculptors, painters, ceramicists, a children’s theatre and musicians.
The spaces are rented out to interested individuals and the prices are fairly reasonable.
Check out their website for their annual open studios. This is always a fun, crowded event and is certainly worth the drive for the special effects studio alone!
Creative Minds at Work
Barney Nunn Cabinet Company
Today I visited the studios of Mathew Craven, Shane McDonald and Fernando D'Astoli. I've known Shane and Matthew for several years, and are always a joy to visit with. They talked about graduating from Kennesaw State University and how they found thier way to the Artisan Resource Center. Shane and Matthew ran a studio in Kennesaw where they offered classes to kids and adults in drawing, painting and ceramics. Shane is well-known for his portraiture, and Matthew is a ceramicist who has works at galleries in New Mexico and Georgia. Fernando is a sculptor who is also a graduate of Kennesaw and shares his knowledge and talent with students. They all agreed that working in a studio environment is probably one of the best things that you could do as an artist. It offers the support of other working artists, exposure to the art market and a professional image for dealing with clients and galleries.
Thanks for your time, gentlemen.
The annual open studio is scheduled for the weekend of November 18th. Go!
